HYPNOSIS: SAFE, SCIENTIFIC, AND EFFECTIVE A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEDICAL HYPNOSIS Hypnosis is an evidenced based therapy that has recently been rapidly gaining worldwide acceptance in medicine, psychology, athletics, and business. It is now recognized as a mainstream approach for many issues. Hypnosis has truly emerged from the old superstitious associations with magic, mysticism, and metaphysics. You won't find incense, crystals, or beaded curtains in my office. The use of hypnosis for healing is hardly new. The Papyrus Ebers described the use of hypnosis over 3500 years ago. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks used hypnosis for healing. Hypnosis became popular as a treatment for medical conditions in the Western world in the late 1700s when effective pharmaceutical and surgical treatment options were limited. With the discovery of Chloroform and Ether for anesthesia, hypnosis faded into the background. Hypnosis then enjoyed a revival for the treatment of battle fatigue during WWI and WWII, and because it was so effective, major universities began to extensively study hypnosis and to re-discover it's great value.
